If you have never cruised, this will sound strange. If you have, you already know: passengers decorate their cabin doors, and some of them go extremely hard at it.
The doors are steel, the hallways are long and identical, and finding your room by landmark beats reading numbers. It started as practical and became a whole culture.
What fails
Printed paper taped up. Ship corridors are humid and heavily air conditioned. Tape lets go by day three, and most lines prohibit adhesives on doors anyway.
Thin flexible magnets with inkjet ink. The cheap souvenir kind bleeds in humidity and curls at the edges.
Anything sticking out more than a quarter inch. Housekeeping carts run those corridors constantly and will take it off for you.
What works
Flat, laminated magnets on 30mil stock. The laminate handles humidity, the thickness holds against the door without curling, and the profile is low enough that nothing catches it.
Two inches square is a good size for a grid — twenty of them make a real display without becoming a project.
What to put on them
The ones that get the most attention in the hallway are the personal ones, not the generic anchors-and-palm-trees you can buy in any port:
- Your family photo with your sail dates
- Your last name and the ship name
- Each kid with their own magnet
- Photos from previous cruises — a running record
- Inside jokes, which is genuinely most of what people put up
The rules, briefly
Magnets are permitted on every major line. Tape, adhesive hooks, and command strips generally are not. Nothing may block the door number or the emergency information. Do not decorate anyone else's door without asking, which sounds obvious and apparently is not.
Sailing from Galveston

Bring extras
Magnets go missing on cruises. Not maliciously — corridors are windy, doors slam, housekeeping moves things. Order a few more than you plan to hang.
They also make good gifts for the people you meet at dinner. Several customers order twenty for the door and another ten to hand out, which is a much better souvenir than anything sold on the promenade deck.
